Death of a Family Trait
It's so easy to feel helpless over the headlines. I get worked up over politics. I get progressively anti-social because of social media. It feels like we have no control.
I was steeped in a southern culture of intolerance, bigotry and hipocracy. And, despite this last gasp of selfish desperation we're witnessing right now, I am also witness to human kindness and the waning of antiquated ideologies, generation by generation. Our children are inclusive, informed and intolerant of intolerance. They ARE the headlines. And we keep them in our careful arms. But we can fuck that up with a few careless words.
This song mirrors similar stories of many folks my age. We know love. We know right from wrong. But we heard words so loaded and hateful that those stick to us too.
Can we vow to be the last generation to perpetuate racism, sexism and any other "ism" by seeding our babies with our grandparents' biases?
Let us have high hopes that the whole nation is on the tail end of men who seek safety in exclusion, who are moved by fear of change. Here's to our children in evolution, revolution ... and anything but hate. Hallelujah.
